چکیده

Bill Stiles wants to enhance the reliability and the utility of theory-building case studies. To do so, he proposes a systematic, replicable approach to clinical case materials that to date has been difficult to use systematically. At the core of his proposal is what he calls “logical operations,” which include some familiar elements of logic: deduction, induction, and abduction. While not without problems in concept and execution, Stiles’ proposal offers those who want to use theorybuilding case studies in their own work the prospect of an empirically-based analytic tool in a field that has not to this time had one.

Commentary on Logical Operations in Theory - Building Case Studies by William Stiles Logic , Hermeneutics , or Both ?

Stiles’ (2009) thesis that logical operations can be employed in case studies making them contributory to theory-building is examined in the light of methodical hermeneutics. The assimilation model of psychotherapeutic change developed by Stiles and colleagues is used to demonstrate the utility of this alternative framework. The question is raised of whether the casestudy research conducted by ...

The Logic of Case-Study Methodology:

The question of how we deploy logic in developing and justifying scientific theories of any sort is an important one. In this commentary, I consider William Stiles’ (2009) arguments about the logical operations that are deployed especially in theory-building case-study research in psychotherapy. My commentary contains three sections, defined by three sets of distinctions: (a) the distinction be...

What Can We Learn from Case Studies? More than Most Psychologists Realize

Stiles (2009) was on target when he argued that theory-building case studies have much more to offer than most psychologists realize. In this analysis of Stiles’ position, I focus on comparisons he drew between theory-building case studies and hypothesis-testing investigations with regard to (a) sensitivity to context, and (b) evaluating theories. Stiles’ suggestion that case studies are contex...

A Key Role for Case Studies: Theory Building

[2011]; and Gray & Stiles [2011]). In addition, the ca...

Evaluating the Philosophies of Theory-Building in Case Studies

The purpose of this reply to Stiles’ (2009) article is threefold: identify his particular philosophy of theory-building, expose some of its problems for evaluation, and describe another philosophy of theory-building as a point of comparison. The article begins by describing how Stiles’ philosophical approach to theory-building is ontologically dualist in nature. Dualism is evident in his view o...
